Finnish national daily Helsingin Sanomat on Thursday quoted a poll as indicating that while Russia´s incursion into Georgia had not had a discernible impact on views for or against membership in Nato, the share of undecided respondents had risen.
Some 57 per cent of respondents, down from just over 60 per cent returned by a similar poll carrier out a year ago, said Finland should not join Nato, while 23 per cent, down by a couple of points from September 2007, said Finland should apply for membership.
About 20 per cent of those polled said they were undecided, up from about 16 per cent a year ago and 11 per cent returned by a poll taken in May last year.
More than 70 per cent were of the opinion that should the government decide on the side of membership, it would have to hold a referendum on the issue.
Commissioned by the paper, market research company Taylor Nelson Sofres interviewed about 1,000 people by telephone on 2-11 September. TNS puts the margin of error at up to three percentage points either way.
