Russian, Finnish presidents discuss South Ossetia

President Halonen expressed her concern over the situation and underlined the importance of getting humanitarian aid to the region as soon as possible

Tarja Halonen, Finland's president, said Monday that it was important for the fighting in South Ossetia to end immediately.

President Halonen's comments came after she had spoken with Russia's president, Dmitry Medvedev, on the phone. The president's office told the Finnish News Agency (STT) that the discussion was held at the initiative of President Medvedev.

During their conversation, President Halonen expressed her concern over the situation and underlined the importance of getting humanitarian aid to the region as soon as possible.

According to President Halonen all troops should be pulled back to where they were before last Wednesday. She also reiterated that there was no military solution to the conflict.
