The school year is starting at most Finnish schools on Monday or Tuesday, depending on the school, although some opened their doors already last week.

Over 57,000 new pupils, usually aged seven in Finland, are starting their compulsory schooling this year. The number is the smallest for a long time, but is expected to start rebounding in 2009 with a return to the over 60,000 level expected in 2013.

In total there are over 560,000 pupils enrolled in the Finnish school system at some stage of their nine years of compulsory education.
