Study shows that the perception of selfish youth is wrong
President Tarja Halonen is pleased with the information that the recent study reveals about Finns’ willingness to help.
According to the study 15 – 24-year-olds are the most eager to help. “Our value heritage has been passed on well from one generation to another even though the means and the object change. Different age groups have different ways of doing things,” Halonen said on 17 July at SuomiAreena discussion in Pori.
In Halonen’s opinion far more demanding discussion subject is how it can be ensured that there are as few people as possible in need of aid, and how society could evolve so that as many people as possible could be their own masters.
The survey, which was conducted by Finland’s Slot Machine Association (RAY), also revealed that while Finns do gladly help their children, parents and other people close to themselves, the urge to personally help decreases when it comes to helping alcoholics or drug addicts.
According to Halonen there is nothing new about this. Throughout history there has been a divide between “good” and “bad” people in need of aid.
“We who decide on common things should see that people are different and that alcoholism, for example, is a sickness. Knowledge can increase tolerance and remove prejudices. We must refrain from dividing people into good and bad,” she said.
Halonen also said that it is nice to be among equals in the Internet, but that everyone should make an effort to tolerate different people, such as immigrants and Roma, in their neighbourhood more.
RAY’s Managing Director Sinikka Mönkäre said that she saw a hardening of attitudes towards helping people, but she also admitted that at the same time there is development towards softening attitudes.
“Youth aren’t seen at aid work”
Minister of Social Affairs and Health Liisa Hyssälä (Centre) was also pleased about the information regarding youths’ willingness to help, but she complained that they are nowhere to be seen. She suspected that young people aren’t interested in the hard work that is an integral part of working in aid organisations.
Secretary General Kristiina Kumpula of the Finnish Red Cross had good experiences with regards to youths’ willingness to help. She said that when she had gone around distributing collection boxes for Nälkäpäivä (Against Hunger) she had come across 16 – 17-year-old boys and girls who already were veterans with regards to collection work.
Hyssälä also urged counties to hire more disabled people for tasks suitable to them.
