Jyri Häkämies (cons), the Finnish defence minister, said the government was planning changing the post of the commander of the Defence Forces into a fixed-term office.
Mr Häkämies added that the successor of Admiral Juhani Kaskeala, due to retire in August next year, might already be appointed for a fixed term.
The minister proposed a term length of five years and no limit on the number of terms an officer could command the forces.
Mr Häkämies stressed that the government did not intend to politicise the post.
