Pekka Visuri, a political scientist at the Finnish National Defence College, said in a column posted on Centre party website Verkkoapila Saturday that Finland's joining Nato might unsettle the security of northern Europe.

Dr Visuri wrote that Europe's security situation had improved markedly since the cold war years and that seeking an increase in military power through an alliance with a distant superpower might undermine the region's stability.

He added that Finland's current defence system, based on conscription, was cost-effective and capable of warding off threats.
